Atlantean figures are on the top of one of the main buildings at the archaeological site of Tula, north of Mexico City. They appear to have some sort of laser gun on one side, qualifying them as candidates in our search for lost technology! Various history books describe them as warriors, with a dart thrower in one hand, and a sheaf of arrows in the other.
Tula was founded in 900 AD. It grew in importance, especially after the fall of Teotihuacan in 750 A.D. It was the capital of the Toltec Empire. It was not until after 1940 that excavations uncovered the buildings of the main plaza. Tula fell under the control of Tenochtitlan, and then became subject to the Aztecs.
Like many sites of this kind, the highest parts were used for ceremonial and religious purposes, and the dwelling places surrounded it.
Tula fell around 1165 A.D., but was not totally abandoned. Structures and ceramics have been found here which correspond to the period of Aztec occupation.
